Modern Sub-Zero refrigerators display error codes on the control panel when something goes wrong. The codes are diagnostic — they point at the failure but they're not always self-explanatory. This guide covers what each code actually means and whether it's DIY or needs a technician.
Classic 500/600-series Sub-Zeros from the 1990s and early 2000s don't display error codes — they use indicator lights instead. If your unit is from that era, the diagnostic path is different. See our built-in repair page for that older diagnostic approach.
Common Sub-Zero error codes
| Code | Meaning | Likely cause | DIY? |
|---|---|---|---|
EC | Condenser issue / temperature | Dirty condenser, condenser fan failure, low refrigerant | Sometimes (clean condenser) |
EE | Evaporator issue | Defrost not completing, evaporator fan failure, sensor | No — needs tech |
E0–E9 | Service mode codes | Various — sensor or board faults | No |
EU | Service is up — maintenance reminder | Standard 1-year service reminder, not a fault | Yes — clear or schedule maintenance |
ICE flashing | Ice maker error | Water inlet valve, frozen line, ice maker module | Sometimes |
OPEN | Door has been open | Door not fully closed | Yes — close door |
SERVICE | General service required | Multiple — needs diagnostic | No |
WATER FILTER | Filter replacement needed | Filter past 6-month interval | Yes — replace filter |
HOT or OVR | Compressor compartment too hot | Condenser blockage, ventilation issue, ambient temperature | Sometimes (check airflow) |
Designer Series (newer integrated columns) specific codes
Sub-Zero Designer Series units (post-2015) use a more sophisticated diagnostic system. Codes appear differently depending on whether you're in normal operating mode or service mode.
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
P1 | Compressor circuit issue |
P2 | Evaporator sensor |
P3 | Condenser sensor |
P4 | Defrost circuit |
P5 | Door switch / not-closed condition |
P6 | Communication fault (board-to-board) |
P7 | Power supply / inverter fault |
How to clear an error code
Most Sub-Zero error codes can be cleared by:
- Address the underlying cause (clean condenser, close door, replace filter, etc.)
- Press and hold the POWER button on the control panel for 5 seconds, OR
- For stubborn codes, briefly turn off power at the breaker and back on (only do this once — repeated power cycling can confuse the unit).
If the code returns immediately, the underlying issue isn't resolved and you need a diagnostic.
When to call us
- Code returns immediately after clearing
- Multiple codes appearing simultaneously
- EE, P1–P7, or SERVICE codes (these are diagnostic-required)
- Code accompanied by temperature drift, ice buildup, or noise change
The error code alone is rarely enough to confirm a repair — it's a starting point. We arrive with a manifold gauge set, multimeter, and parts for the most common failures associated with each code.
Frequently Asked Questions
My Sub-Zero shows "EU" and won't cool. Is it broken?
EU is the standard 1-year service reminder, NOT a fault code. It appears once a year regardless of unit condition. If your unit isn't cooling, the EU message is unrelated — you have a separate issue.
I cleared an error code but it came back the next day. Now what?
That means the underlying condition is still present. Time for a diagnostic. Note the code, when it appeared, and any other symptoms — we'll bring the right parts.
Can I unplug my Sub-Zero to clear an error?
You can, but be aware: some models lock out the compressor for 15–30 minutes after power restoration to prevent damage. If your unit doesn't resume cooling right away, that's why. Wait 30 minutes before assuming it's broken.
My unit displays a code with no documentation in the manual. Help?
Sub-Zero service technicians have access to service-mode codes that aren't in the consumer manual. Call us with the exact code displayed and we can usually look it up before dispatch.
