The ice maker is the single most frequently failing component on a Sub-Zero refrigerator. It's also one of the most misdiagnosed. We get calls all the time from owners who were told they needed a new control board when in fact the water inlet valve was the issue, or that they needed a new ice maker when the harvest motor just needed replacement.
Two kinds of Sub-Zero ice maker
Internal ice maker (inside built-in refrigerator/freezer)
Standard on most BI-series and Designer Series. Lives inside the freezer compartment, makes crescent-shaped ice. Module-based: when the icemaker assembly fails, we replace the module.
7000-series standalone clear-ice maker
Premium under-counter unit that makes commercial-grade clear ice. Mechanically more complex than the internal — it has its own compressor, water reservoir, harvest cycle, and reservoir drain pump. Common failures: the harvest assembly, the reservoir pump, or the inlet valve.
Failure modes & what we find
1. No ice production at all
Top causes in order of frequency:
- Water inlet valve failed or shut off (about 35% of "no ice" calls). Easy diagnosis: we cycle the valve manually with the freezer door open.
- Frozen water line (especially in NYC apartments where the building water valve is in an unheated wall cavity).
- Ice maker module electrical failure — typically harvest motor or control thermostat.
- Building water shut-off at the saddle valve, easily missed if you didn't recently have plumbing work done.
2. Ice production stopped after seeming fine
Often the ice container's level sensor (a paddle or optical sensor depending on model) is hung up in the "full" position. Other times the ice cubes have frozen together into a single mass, jamming the auger or causing the unit to think it's full.
3. Ice cubes too small or hollow
Water pressure or water valve cycling issue. The valve is opening for a shorter time than it should, partially filling the mold. Sometimes a partially-clogged saddle valve in the building wall.
4. Bad-tasting ice
Three causes: filter past replacement (most common), water line picking up odors from plastic, or ice sitting in the bin too long. We replace filters, sanitize the water path, and clean the ice container.
5. Ice maker leaking water
Often the water inlet valve sticking partially open, or a cracked supply line. Less commonly the fill tube has frozen at the valve outlet and water is backing up.
What we charge
Repair costs depend on the model, the exact failure mode, parts required, and on-site access conditions. Our flat $125 service call covers the on-site diagnostic and a written, itemized estimate. The $125 is credited toward the repair if you approve it — so you only pay the diagnostic fee if you decide not to proceed.
For an honest cost range tailored to your specific issue and model, call us at (646) 863-5411. With your model number and symptom, we can usually give you a realistic range on the phone before we even dispatch.
Before you call: try these
- Check the on/off switch. Built-ins have an arm or button that disables ice production. Easy to bump.
- Confirm water supply. Run your refrigerator water dispenser if you have one. No water flow there means no water at the ice maker either.
- Check the freezer is at proper temp (typically 0°F / -18°C). Ice makers cycle based on freezer temperature reaching a setpoint. Too warm and the harvest cycle never triggers.
- Look at the ice bin. Cubes fused together can lock the harvest mechanism.
None of those? Call us. Our trucks carry a wide range of replacement parts for Sub-Zero ice systems, so most repairs finish on the first visit.

Frequently Asked Questions
My ice maker makes ice but the cubes have a weird taste. Is that a repair?
Usually not — it's a filter and line-sanitation issue. We can do a complete water-system sanitation pass during the visitor you can DIY: replace the filter, dump existing ice, and run the dispenser for 60 seconds before saving ice again.
How long does an ice maker repair take?
Ice maker module replacement: 30–45 minutes once we're on-site. Water valve: 45–60 minutes. After the repair, you won't see ice production for 4–6 hours — that's how long the freezer needs to fully chill the new module and complete its first harvest cycle.
Can you install a Sub-Zero ice maker into a unit that didn't come with one?
Sometimes. Many built-ins are pre-wired and pre-plumbed for an ice maker. We can check during a service call — if everything is in place, ice maker installation depends on the specific model and parts required including the module.
My 7000 ice maker stopped working after a power outage. What happened?
Power outages can trip the GFCI it's plugged into, freeze the water in the reservoir, or scramble its electronic memory. Try this: unplug for 5 minutes, plug back in, manually advance through the cycle. If it doesn't resume, call us — the harvest motor sometimes burns out trying to overcome frozen water.
