"My Sub-Zero ice maker stopped making ice." We get this call multiple times a week. Sometimes it's a quick fix you can do yourself. Sometimes it's a control board. Here's the diagnostic order we work in.

Step 1: Is the ice maker turned on?
Sub-Zero ice makers have an on/off switch. On the freezer column or freezer side of a side-by-side, there's a paddle or arm — when it's lifted up, the ice maker is OFF. When it's down (resting on the ice bin), it's ON. If someone in the household lifted the arm to clean and forgot to put it back, no ice. Check this first. We've taken $125 service calls for this exact problem.
On newer units with electronic controls, there's a button on the control panel that toggles ice making. Verify the icon shows ON.
Step 2: Is the water supply on?
Trace the water line from the back of the refrigerator. Find the shut-off valve (usually under the sink or behind the unit). Is it open? If the building did plumbing work recently, the valve may have been closed and not re-opened. Open it and wait 24 hours to see if ice production resumes.
If the valve is open but no water is flowing to the ice maker, the next check is the water filter. Sub-Zero water filters are model-specific and need replacement every 6-12 months. A heavily clogged filter can drop water flow to nothing.
Step 3: Is the freezer cold enough?
Sub-Zero ice makers stop making ice if the freezer is above 15°F. If your freezer is running warm — say, 25-30°F — the ice maker has shut itself off as a safety measure. The underlying problem isn't the ice maker; it's the freezer cooling. That's a different (and more involved) diagnostic. If you see soft ice cream or frozen items that have partially thawed, the freezer is the issue, not the ice maker.
Step 4: Is the fill tube frozen?
This is common in older Sub-Zeros. The fill tube delivers water from the supply line to the ice maker tray. If the tube has a kink or the heater that prevents freezing has failed, the tube can freeze solid — water can't get to the tray, no ice. Visible inspection of the tube (after pulling the ice bin) often shows this. The fix is to thaw the tube (hair dryer, slowly) and address the underlying heater issue. We do this on calls regularly.
Step 5: Has the ice maker been frosted over?
If the ice maker assembly itself is buried in frost, the defrost system has a problem. Sub-Zero defrost issues can be the defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or defrost timer/control board. This is more complex — it usually warrants a service call.
Step 6: Module / motor failure
The ice maker module on a Sub-Zero contains the motor that rotates the tray to eject ice, plus the harvest mechanism. When the module fails, you'll often hear nothing happening even when the ice maker should be cycling. Replacement modules are available and we keep them on the truck for common models.
What to tell us when you call
If you've gone through the steps above and the ice maker still won't make ice, call us. The more info you can give the dispatcher, the better:
- Model number (on the spec plate inside the freezer)
- When did it stop working? Suddenly or gradually?
- Is the freezer holding temperature properly?
- Have you seen water leaking anywhere?
- Have you replaced the water filter recently?
- Have you heard the ice maker trying to cycle (clicks, brief motor sound) or is it silent?
That information lets us bring the right parts on the first visit. Same-day Manhattan and Brooklyn.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should I wait after turning on a new Sub-Zero before ice production starts?
24-48 hours from when the freezer first reached temperature and the water supply was connected. If 48 hours have passed and no ice, troubleshoot.
Why is my Sub-Zero ice maker making slow / small ice cubes?
Usually low water flow. Check the water filter (replace if more than 6 months old), check the water supply valve fully open, and check for any kinks in the water line behind the refrigerator.
My Sub-Zero ice has a strange taste — what causes that?
Almost always the water filter. Sub-Zero filters should be replaced every 6 months. After replacement, dump the first 2-3 trays of ice — they'll have residual taste from the new filter.
Can I keep using my Sub-Zero refrigerator while waiting for ice maker repair?
Yes. The ice maker is independent of the cooling system. The refrigerator and freezer work normally — you just won't have ice. Some people prefer to keep the ice maker off when it's broken so it doesn't cycle uselessly.
