Of all the calls we get about Sub-Zero ice makers, about half end up being something the owner could have caught themselves. Worth running through this list before you book.
1. Is the on/off switch on?
Most Sub-Zero ice makers have an on/off switch — sometimes a paddle, sometimes a button, sometimes a control panel toggle. Easy to bump. Check first.
2. Is the water supply on?
Try the water dispenser if your refrigerator has one. No water there means no water at the ice maker either. The supply valve might be off (saddle valve, building shut-off, or a sink-area shut-off if plumbed that way).
3. Is the freezer cold enough?
Ice makers cycle based on freezer temperature reaching their setpoint (typically around 0°F). If your freezer has drifted to 15°F, the ice maker will refuse to make ice — even though the freezer is still "cold." Check your freezer temperature display.
4. Has the bin frozen into a single mass?
Old ice that has been sitting in the bin can fuse together. This can lock the auger mechanism or trip the "full" sensor. Empty the bin, dump out the old ice, let things reset for an hour, then check again.
5. Is the water filter past its replacement interval?
Sub-Zero recommends replacement every 6 months. A clogged filter can restrict water flow to the point where the ice maker doesn't get enough water per cycle. Check your filter date.
6. Did you recently lose power or have plumbing work?
Both can trigger downstream problems. Power outages can scramble the ice maker's electronic memory; plumbing work can leave the water valve shut off or air in the line. Both can require manual reset.
7. Anything visibly wrong?
Look at the ice maker assembly itself. Frozen-over fill tube? Ice cubes hanging halfway out? Water visibly leaking? These are signs that point to specific failures.
If none of those — three likely causes
A) Water inlet valve failed
The water inlet valve is an electrically-operated valve that opens momentarily during each ice cycle to fill the mold. When it fails (stuck closed, electrical fault), no water reaches the ice maker.
Diagnostic: A technician applies voltage to the valve directly to verify it opens. If it doesn't, the valve is replaced.
Cost depends on the specific model and failure mode — call us for a range.
B) Ice maker module failed
The whole assembly that fills the mold, monitors temperature, harvests the ice, and dumps it into the bin. When the internal harvest motor or thermistor fails, the whole module is usually replaced (it's cheaper to replace the assembly than diagnose internal failures).
Cost depends on the specific model and failure mode — call us for a range.
C) Frozen water line
The water line between the inlet valve and the ice maker can freeze, especially in apartments where the line passes through unheated wall cavities. Symptoms: occasional small ice cubes for a few cycles, then no ice. Sometimes water dripping behind the unit.
Fix: Thaw the line (rerouting if needed). Sometimes requires partial unit pull-out.

What about the 7000-series clear ice maker?
The standalone 7000-series ("clear ice") unit is mechanically more complex than the built-in module. It has its own compressor and reservoir-based water system. Failure modes are different — see our ice maker repair page for the deeper dive.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long after a repair until I see ice?
4–6 hours typical. The ice maker module needs to fully chill, do its first water fill, freeze the mold to harvest temperature, and complete the harvest. First batch of ice is sometimes small or partial.
My ice maker makes ice but it tastes funny. Is that a repair?
Usually a maintenance issue, not a repair. Filter past replacement date, ice sitting too long in the bin, or odors absorbed through the water line. We can do a full water-system sanitation during the visitor you can DIY by replacing the filter, dumping old ice, and running fresh water through for a minute.
Is the ice maker arm in the up position important?
Yes — that's the on/off paddle on most older Sub-Zero models. Up = off, down = on. If it's up, no ice. If your unit has a different style (button or switch), check the manual or just look for the toggle.
Can the freezer be too cold for the ice maker to work?
Unusual but yes. If the freezer is set below -10°F, the water can sometimes freeze before completely filling the mold, producing hollow or partial cubes. Reset the freezer to factory default (0°F).
