Wolf Range Igniter Replacement: What to Expect

How igniter replacement works on Wolf ranges, what it costs, and what to know before you schedule the repair.

Wolf range igniter replacement in progress

Igniter replacement is one of the most common Wolf range repairs. The igniter is the small ceramic-tipped electrode that creates the spark to light each burner. They wear out over time (8–12 years typical) and can also fail prematurely from food spills or water exposure.

How replacement works

  1. Disconnect gas and power. Standard safety before any work on a gas range.
  2. Remove the burner cap and head. Hand-removal, no tools.
  3. Disconnect the igniter wire from the spark module under the cooktop.
  4. Unscrew the old igniter from its mount. (Sometimes a clip rather than a screw.)
  5. Install the new igniter. Connect the wire. Verify polarity if applicable.
  6. Reassemble burner. Reconnect gas. Test ignition.
  7. Verify the entire range works correctly before leaving.

On-site time: 30–60 minutes per igniter. Sometimes longer if other burners need check during the visit.

Cost

Why bundle all of them? If one igniter has reached end of life, the others on the same range are usually close behind. Doing them all in one visit saves multiple service calls.

OEM vs aftermarket igniters

We install OEM Wolf igniters only. Aftermarket igniters exist and are cheaper than OEM, but:

The labor cost dominates the repair price, so the savings on a cheap igniter aren't worth the long-term hassle.

Can you DIY igniter replacement?

Technically yes — the parts are available from authorized Wolf parts retailers. Practical reasons not to:

If you're a confident DIYer with no gas concerns, it can be done. For most owners, the depends on the specific model and failure mode repair is worth the convenience and warranty.

Signs your Wolf igniter is failing (before it fully fails)

Igniters rarely fail suddenly — they degrade. Catching the degradation early saves you from a half-cooked dinner situation. Signs:

Bundle replacement: when it makes sense

If one igniter has failed, the others on the same range have likely seen similar usage and are at similar wear points. We frequently recommend bundle replacement for cost efficiency:

What does this repair actually cost?

Repair costs depend on the model, the exact failure mode, parts required, and on-site access conditions. Our flat $125 service call covers the on-site diagnostic and a written, itemized estimate. The $125 is credited toward the repair if you approve it — so you only pay the diagnostic fee if you decide not to proceed.

For an honest cost range tailored to your specific issue and model, call us at (646) 863-5411. With your model number and symptom, we can usually give you a realistic range on the phone before we even dispatch.

Why bundle saves money: most of the cost is labor (range disassembly, access). Doing all igniters in one visit avoids paying that labor twice if the others fail in 6 months.

When NOT to bundle

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a bad igniter cause a gas leak?

Not directly. Igniter failure means no spark, so the burner doesn't light. If the gas valve is also failed (stuck open), then gas could escape — but that's a separate failure mode. Your nose is the best detector: any gas smell, turn off the main valve and call.

How can I tell if it's the igniter or the spark module?

If clicking happens normally but the spark looks weak (a faint click rather than a strong snap), it's often the igniter. If clicking is completely absent on one or all burners, more likely the spark module. Final diagnosis on-site with continuity testing.

My igniters all stopped working at once. What's the cause?

Almost certainly the spark module, not the individual igniters (very unlikely for them all to fail simultaneously). The module is what powers all the igniters — when it fails, none of them spark.

Are Wolf igniters interchangeable with other brands?

No. Wolf uses specific igniter assemblies with specific connector types and spark gaps. Don't substitute parts from generic appliance brands — fit and function are wrong.
