Sub-Zero Service

Sub-Zero Undercounter Refrigerator & Drawer Repair

UC-15, UC-24 refrigerator drawers, beverage centers, and undercounter wine units. Compact compressors, drawer mechanisms, drain lines.

Sub-Zero 424 undercounter unit

Undercounter Sub-Zero units have grown popular in NYC kitchen designs over the last decade — refrigerator drawers in the island, beverage centers near the entertaining area. They use compact compressors that run hotter than full-size units, which means they need their condenser grilles kept clear, and they fail in slightly different ways than the big built-ins.

Models we service

Common undercounter failures

Drawer not closing fully

Either the slides are gummed up or the gasket is compressed wrong. We clean and lubricate slides; if they're worn we replace them. Gasket replacement when needed.

Warm temperatures, compressor running constantly

Almost always dust packed into the condenser at the front kickplate. These compact units have small condensers and even a thin layer of dust kills efficiency. We clean it during service. Annual maintenance prevents this.

Water in the drawer / unit not draining

Auto-defrost water normally evaporates from a small pan over the compressor. When the drain line is blocked or the pan cracks, water collects. We clear drains and replace drain pans as needed.

Compressor noise

Compact compressors run higher RPM and inherently noisier than full-size. But if yours suddenly got louder, it's usually a failing mount or a fan rubbing.

Components we service

Common undercounter configurations we see

The "undercounter" Sub-Zero category has expanded a lot since the original UC-15. Here are the typical NYC kitchen configurations:

Where undercounters differ from full-size built-ins

Compact compressors

Smaller compressors that run more cycles per hour than full-size units. Inherently noisier and shorter-lived (12–15 years typical vs. 20+ for big built-ins). Condenser is also smaller, which means it's more sensitive to dust accumulation.

Drawer mechanisms

Heavy use on drawer slides — opening 20+ times a day will wear out the slide hardware faster than door hinges on a regular refrigerator. Our trucks carry replacement slide assemblies for most models.

Auto-defrost on small evaporators

Compact evaporators frost over faster than full-size. The auto-defrost system works hard. When the defrost cycle fails on an undercounter, frost buildup blocks the small evaporator quickly.

Undercounter installation gotchas we see

Wrong installation kills compact units faster than anything:

We can diagnose installation issues during a service call and recommend fixes — but actually correcting cabinetry is usually a job for your contractor.

Why NYC Sub-Zero & Wolf owners trust us

Our guarantee, in writing

Every repair includes a 180-day labor warranty and a 1-year manufacturer warranty on every OEM Sub-Zero and Wolf part we install. Written and handed to you before we leave. If the same issue returns within that window, we come back at no labor charge.

Frequently Asked Questions

My UC-24 is making a lot of noise. Concerning?

Worth a diagnostic. Compact compressors are naturally noisier than full-size, but a sudden change in noise level usually means something. Could be as simple as a fan rubbing on accumulated dust, or as serious as compressor mount failure.

Beverage center isn't getting cold enough. Can it hit 38°F?

Yes, factory spec is typically 36°F-45°F. If yours can't reach lower than 50°F, you have a problem — most often condenser blockage or low refrigerant.

How long do these compact units last?

Typically 12-15 years with proper maintenance (annual condenser cleaning). Compact compressors don't last as long as the big built-in compressors but they're also cheaper to replace when they go.
